China’s Zhurong rover has established that Mars may have had liquid water hundreds of millions of years more recently than earlier thought.
Scientists have assumed that Mars was wet about 3 billion years ago; meanwhile, its Hesperian time lost water. But recent research confirms water bustle from just 700m years ago, well into the present butch time, posing the latest puzzle to crack about the Red Planet and its antiquity.
The current study is based upon data from China’s Zhurong rover, the portion of the Tianwen-1 mission & that landed on Mars in May 2021.

Specifically, the scientists used data collected by the rover during its first 92 Martian days, or sol, at its landing stage in Utopia Planitia. Yang Liu, an analyst at the National Space Science Center (NSSC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and colleagues figured out data from 3 distinctive instruments on Zhurong: the laser-persuaded fracture spectrometer (MarSCoDe), the camera for telescopic micro-images, & the scarlet short-wave spectrometer.

According to the team, those instruments examined minerals that recommend the occupancy of a considerable quantity of water about 700 million years back, well into the present Amazonian epoch, which scientists earlier thought was dry.

“This is an exciting outcome,” says Eva Scheller, a planetary scientist at the California Institution of Technology who was not included in the current research. We have minimal registered confirmation of ‘young’ water systems on Mars. And we do have commonly in the form of salt minerals.
But Zhurong’s instruments stippled water molecules locked in the rock, “which is interesting and distinct from other recognized young liquid water environments,” Scheller said. “This means that specific forms of aquifer minerals would have formed at many later times than earlier invented in another scientific study.”
